Assessment Prep To-Do List!

I was reminded this weekend, after talking with someone on Facebook who was looking for calculator advice, that it is that time of year when teachers and students are getting ready for those end-of-the year benchmark assessments and/or standardized assessments. The comment from this parent, who was asking for advice on what graphing calculator to buy their child for taking that SAT, and I suggested the fx-9750GIII as a great option, and the response was, “Casio’s are not allowed on standardized tests”. I set them straight, obviously (Casio calculators are indeed allowed!),  but it made me realize now would be a great time to remind everyone what is allowed/not allowed on assessments (in particular those standardized ones, like ACT and SAT), and to share some helpful resources to make sure teachers and students are ready for those upcoming assessments.

This post is really a to-do list - i.e. check out the resources, tips, and how-to’s, to make sure you and your students are prepped and ready for a successful testing experience.

First, here are the ‘approved’ calculator lists for the main standardized tests. If you have state-specific tests that you are curious about, most states/testing sites and districts provide an approved technology/calculator list for their specific tests. Even if assessments are online, with online calculator tools, most students are allowed to have a physical, approved calculator available as well. Your school or teacher should be able to provide you with more information.

Next on the to-do, some tests require calculators to be put into Exam Mode to prevent the use of stored programs and the like. This is usually graphing calculators, here is a video that shows how to enable Exam Mode on a Casio Graphing calculator.

We also have a couple blog posts that full of helpful tips for preparing for the AP, ACT, and SAT - those are definitely worth a revisit:

I would also suggest checking out a few of our previous webinars or how-to videos that provide some tips and support for test taking.

There are more on our Casio Youtube Channel - just search by test tips!

Happy assessment prepping and good luck! If you are looking for some support for the NY Regents Exams, we have a webinar coming up on April 29th, so be sure to sign up for that!!
